In order to meet the huge demand of skilled manpower in Textile & RMG industries BGMEA University of Fashion & Technology (BUFT) first started its journey as BGMEA Institute of Fashion & Technology (BIFT) in 1999. With a visionary step by group of dynamic philanthropic RMG entrepreneurs BUFT was established in March 2012, BUFT is run by a Trustee Board that comprises twenty-one philanthropists, educationalists headed by Founder Chairman Mr. Muzaffar U. Siddique a renowned industrialist of Bangladesh. Renowned Educationist Prof. Dr.S.M Mahfuzur Rahman is the Vice Chancellor of BUFT.

BUFT has been making a significant contribution to higher education since its inception. As a centre of excellence, this university imparts quality education and modern education to the students so that they can confidently face global challenges of new millennium. In order to cater to the manpower needs in multiple Textile, RMG and Fashion industries in Bangladesh, BUFT offers 4 year undergraduate courses in Textile Engineering, Textile Engineering & Management, Industrial Engineering, Apparel Manufacturing & Merchandising, Knitwear Manufacturing, Fashion Studies &Fashion Design & Technology, Business, Environmental Science & English. It also offers Graduate Degrees in Business Administration, Textile Engineering and Fashion Design. Diploma Course in Apparel Marchandising. Moreover, Certificate courses are offered in Apparel, Knit, Woven & Sweater Merchandising.

The knowledge, skills and practical training that BUFT graduates possess enable them to build their chosen career and contribute effectively towards the overall development of the nation. Students benefit from high quality teaching with access to international standard facilities as well as professional input into courses through prestigious internships, industry projects and placements, seminars and workshops delivered by renowned industry professionals. Foreign educated faculty members & student’s participation in national as well as international competitions on fashion, debate, essay, football, cricket.

Additionally, students from various departments have won competitions organized by the Society of Dyers and Colorists (SDC) International Design Competition, IFFTI Fashion Design Competition, TESCO, Yellow, Otago Polytechnic, Beijing Institute of Fashion, Bangladesh National Fashion Design Competition and many more. In BUFT there are seventeen student clubs on Debate, Cultural, English Language Fashion, Apparel, Textiles, Social, Environment, Career etc. BUFT Debate club has won the National Debate Competition several times. These clubs are engaged in involving students in extra-curricular activities that make each student well-rounded.

Academic programmes are carried out in Nishatnagar, adjacent to Uttara at Dhaka city with 500,000 sq. feet area that facilitates 75 class rooms and 53 state of the art laboratories, high speed broadband internet facilities, a digital library, advanced research labs, and photography labs, well-equipped multipurpose hall, seminar hall, modern auditorium. The campus is surrounded by greenery besides which river Turag is flowing. The building has a Terracotta on Bengali culture, heritage, traditional textiles and most importantly on history of country’s independence.

BUFT has collaboration with many Internationally Renowned Universities of Australia, UK, China, India, South Korea, Malaysia, Germany, Netherlands and the Czech Republic. Under these collaborations every year many BUFT students are pursuing their undergraduate, MSc and PhD studies at the partner institutions with full scholarships and tuition waivers. The university maintains a high academic standard and has an excellent market reputation with higher employability rate of graduates both nationally and internationally. Some of its graduate are national award winner and also young textile & RMG entrepreneurs.

Besides maintaining partnerships with top universities, it has also participated in several local and international academic and research projects. It has most notably been a part of the following international research projects: DelPHE, Nuffic NICHE, SMART 2020, STEP UP+, BUYING 2, Local International, and German-Bangladesh HEST Project.

BUFT is a permanent member of the International Federation of Fashion Technology Institute (IFFTI) and Corporate member of the Textile Institute, U.K. Society of Dyers & Colourists (SDC) U.K. Association of Commonwealth Universities, (ACU), Association of Management Development Institute in South Asia (AMDISA), International Apparel Federation (IAF), WGSN, Garber USA, Lactra France.

As a result of the present pandemic, all classes have been held online over the past year. BUFT lead all Bangladeshi universities in academic programme held online as well as university wise class hours as ranked by Bangladesh Research Education and Network (BdREN), a subsidiary of University Grants Commission Bangladesh, (UGC)

BUFT prioritizes student development and imparting quality education growth. This has been maintained by monitoring students learning and the results they obtain. Students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities so that they become more well-rounded individuals with leadership qualities. Student success has always been and will continue to be at the forefront of BUFT’s mission. By doing so, BUFT has emerged as the gold standard for Textile, Apparel and Fashion education in Bangladesh. It became the best learning place for all admission seekers of the country and abroad.
