Vice Chancellor, Architect Prof. Dr. Nizamuddin Ahmed taught Architecture for over three decades at BUET, and is a former Dean and Head. Specialised in industrial buildings, acoustics and Means of Escape in fire, Dr. Ahmed did his PhD and postdoctoral research at the University of Sheffield, England. He is a Commonwealth Scholar and a Commonwealth Fellow.

Dr. Nizam graduated from BUET with Bachelor of Architecture 1979 and completed his Master of Architecture 1984. He did his SSC from Dhaka Residential Model College 1969. His HSC was from Jhenaidah Cadet College 1972. His education includes over fifteen years of hostel living, starting from KGII at Our Lady of Fatema Convent School, Comilla. He has also studied at HH the Aga Khan Secondary Boys School, Dares Salaam, Tanzania, 1965-67.

Books written by Dr. Nizam include Industrial Architecture for Developing Countries (Vikas, New Delhi, 1992), Kishore Biswa Sthapatya (Children’s book on World Architecture) (Bangla Academy, 2000), Acoustics for Architects (BUET, 2010), Agenda for Urban Concern (Bangladesh Scouts, 2012), Ognikande Nirapatta (Safety in Fire) (Housing and Building Research Institute, 2014), and Chintito (a compendium his column 1995-97 published in The Daily Star, 2006).

Freedom Fighter Dr. Nizam was trained at Melaghar, India under Sector 2 in 1971, and is a Charter Member of the Muktijuddho Jadughar.

A Woodbadger and a trained Scout Leader, Dr. Nizam has been decorated with Bangladesh’s highest Scout award, the Silver Tiger. He has been a National Commissioner and chairperson of National Committees of Bangladesh Scouts. He is Bangladesh’s only Baden-Powell Fellow of the World Scout Foundation, a Bronze Member of the Africa Scout Foundation, and a Bronze Palm Member of the Asia Pacific Scout Foundation. He is a Member and Promotion Coordinator of Asia-Pacific Scout Foundation Management Committee 2015-18.

Charter President of Rotary Club of Dhaka Urbana, Dr. Nizam is a Major Donor Rotarian.

Architect Dr. Nizam’s major design works include Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP), MIST Hostel for Men and Women, Kurmitola Golf Club clubhouse, Apex Footwear first factory building, Rangamati Waterfront resort, and under-construction Wari-Bateswar Museum, Narsinghdi. His acoustics-cum-interior design works include Chhayanaut, Shilpakala Academy Natyashala and Art Gallery, Sena Kunjo and Golf Garden auditoriums, BCS auditorium, and 15 Shilpakala district auditoriums, and three Nri Goshti Auditoriums.

A keen golfer of Kurmitola Golf Club, Dr. Ahmed has played hockey for Dhaka Mohammedan SC 1968­78, of which club he is a permanent member. He has represented his school in football and hockey, and was a member of the school band. Nizam was the highest scorer when Residential Model School, Dhaka became East Pakistan inter-school hockey champions 1968. He represented Jhenaidah Cadet College in football, hockey and basketball. He was a member of BUET hockey team, and its captain 1978.

He was elected Sports Secretary of Titumir Hall Students Union 1975 as a Bangladesh Chhatro League candidate, and General Secretary of BUET Teachers Association 1991. Dr. Nizam was elected Director of Bangladesh Cricket Board when Saber H Chowdhury was president 2001-04.

Dr. Nizam was president of Jhenaidah Ex-cadets Association 1988-90 and of Old REMIANS Association of Dhaka Residential Model College 2006-16. He is a founder Trustee of BUET Alumni Association 2008. He was Convenor, Founding Committee, Architecture Alumni Association of BUET (ArcAAB), 2000-01. He instituted ArcSA (Architecture Students Association, BUET) when he was Head of the Department 2006.

He joined The Bangladesh Times as its Sports Reporter 1974 when Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni was the Editor and continued till 1980. As Sports Editor of The Daily Star 1995-1999, he covered cricket World Cups 1996 and 1999, and football World Cup 1998. He is Bangladesh Sports Press Association awardee 2009.

Hailing from Sutiakati in Swarupkati UZ, Pirojpur district, he was born at Barisal Red Cross Hospital. Dr. Nizam’s mother Johara Ahmed was a housewife. His father Hemayetuddin Ahmed was a banker. His wife Architect Prof. Dr. Zebun Nasreen Ahmed is at BUET. His son Dr. Raasheduddin Ahmed is married to Dr. Most. Mahbuba Iasmin Rupsi, both Civil Engineers from BUET. His daughter Eeman Nasreen Ahmed is a NSU business graduate and runs “Andeem”, a designer dress enterprise, and is wife to Mushroof Ahmed, the product head of Burger King in Bangladesh.
