About

Ms. Sarmily Sarker is a highly accomplished and passionate educator, currently working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Fashion Studies at BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology (BUFT) in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Her experience spans over a decade in academia and the fashion industry, with a rich repertoire of skills that intersect at the junction of fashion, textiles, and sustainability.

Born in Bangladesh, Sarmily's initial education began with a B.F.A and M.F.A in Textile Design from the prestigious Visva-Bharati University in India. Her educational journey continued with a PGD in Corporate Social Responsibility from Nyenrode Business University, Netherlands, and a short course in Fashion Trend Forecasting from the London College of Fashion. This eclectic educational background honed her expertise in various domains, including textile design, fabric construction and analysis, trend research, color theory, and sustainable design.

Her tenure at BUFT began as a Lecturer in September 2012 and evolved to Assistant Professor in 2016. Sarmily had the unique experience of serving as the Department Head of Fashion Design from August 2017 to March 2019, thereby showcasing her leadership abilities. Moreover, her role as a Guest Faculty at NIFT, India, under the IFFTI Faculty Exchange Program, underscores her global exposure.

Sarmily's contributions extend beyond academics, with a stint as a Textile Designer at Aranya Crafts Ltd., a renowned association of Bengal Foundation. Her work revolves around sustainable textile design, eco printing, and dying, which reflects her commitment to environmentally conscious practices.

Sarmily's rich body of work is also reflected in her extensive list of workshops and short courses. Her active participation in seminars, conferences, and professional training programs has kept her in the vanguard of knowledge and expertise. Sarmily has also distinguished herself through numerous exhibitions, both solo and group, showcasing her creative prowess and unique perspective.

Her research publications and projects reveal a scholar with a keen interest in integrating sustainability into fashion and textiles. Projects like NICHE, Step Up+, and Buying 2 emphasize her focus on CSR and innovative management in the Readymade Garment sector, fostering change in the fashion industry through a business perspective.

Sarmily's talent has been recognized internationally, receiving awards like the Uday Shankar Memorial Award in Painting by the Governor of West-Bengal, India, and the winner of the International Poland Competition.

As a mentor, she's helped nurture future fashion leaders through events like The Karun Thakar Scholarship Award 2023 and the YELLOW-BUFT Fashion Fest 2019 &2023. Sarmily's commitment to her students' growth and her pursuit of innovative, sustainable practices in fashion and textiles make her a respected figure in academia and the fashion industry.
